Pioneering defence technology with early access to cutting-edge Intel processors

In the ever-changing landscape of defence technology, staying ahead with the latest innovations can be a game-changer. We pride ourselves on our dedication to pushing the boundaries of what's possible, ensuring our customers always get their hands on the freshest, most cutting-edge technologies. This case study shines a spotlight on a triumphant moment where our proactive mindset and early adoption of a new Intel processor led to a major contract win in the defence sector, reaffirming our status as industry trailblazers.

Project Overview

In early 2022, we shared an exciting roadmap of upcoming projects with one of our key sales partners, who supplied parts to a major defence Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM). The OEM, busy developing advanced defence vehicles, spotted an opportunity to export these vehicles internationally. Eager to boost their export potential, they decided to upgrade from their locally produced VME technology to the more advanced SOSA-aligned 3U VPX technology. They also aimed to incorporate the latest Intel processor to enhance their defence vehicle technologies.

The Challenge

The OEM needed the latest technology to design and develop their upgraded land vehicles, requiring top-tier, reliable, and high-performance computing power. The switch from VME to SOSA-aligned 3U VPX technology was essential for enhancing vehicle performance and capabilities. This upgrade needed the fastest computing silicon for improved efficiency and quicker sensor data handling. The race was on to secure this technology ahead of the competition, ensuring a strong market edge.

Our Solution

We had just what the OEM needed: a SOSA-aligned VPX board in development featuring the new Intel processor. Key features of the 11th Gen Intel® Core™ Processor, vital for the OEM’s upgraded vehicles, included:

  • Integrated GPGPU for AI and image processing

  • XMC site for additional compute or I/O resources to support existing supplier functionality

  • Direct-attached solid-state storage option

Recognising the urgency and strategic importance of this project, we committed to delivering four sample working boards to the OEM by November 2022. This timely delivery, ahead of our competitors, demonstrated our ability to provide cutting-edge technology swiftly and effectively.

Outcomes and Impact

Our swift delivery of the latest Intel processor-enabled VPX boards was a game-changer for the OEM. Early access allowed them to efficiently design and develop their upgraded land vehicles. The OEM praised the exceptional performance and reliability of our VPX boards and the seamless transition our team facilitated.

  • Contract Win for Land Vehicles: Our collaboration led to a significant contract win worth approximately £360,000 for a conduction-cooled variant of our TR K9 boards based on the 11th Gen Intel® Core™ Processor.

  • Follow-up Success: The OEM's satisfaction and smooth qualification with our boards led to their use in a second land vehicle project.
