Our VME Strategy

The latest version of the VITA Market Report, published in 2023, shows the quantity and revenue of VME boards continues to be strong. This is because many legacy applications in the defence, semiconductor process control, medical and physics spaces either cannot, or don’t need to, migrate to a newer standard.

Not only do we have a roadmap for new VME boards, we launched a new low cost VME board in 2024 based on an Intel Atom® processor.

In 2018 we launched two VME processor boards that are based on Intel processor devices that have a 15-year life cycle and are available in air-cooled and rugged conduction-cooled variants for use in a variety of deployments.

We took a strategic decision in 2014 to base all new VME boards on the tried and tested Universe-II VME bridge to maintain our Enhanced VMEbus API used by customers worldwide.  At the time we surveyed our customer base, 95% of which said they only used the basic VME64 functionality, some also told us they use VME format boards but use Gigabit Ethernet for their data communications.

Our new boards

A VME board.
Rhea is based around a 4-core Intel Atom® processor x7000 with a wide mix of I/O flexibility and designed to be backwards compatible with other low cost VME boards

VP B7x/msd is based around a six-core Intel® Xeon® processor E-2176M (formerly known as Coffee Lake) and up to 32Gbytes of DDR4 memory.

VP F6x/msd is fitted with a four-core Intel® Xeon® processor E3-1505L v6 and includes dual PMC/XMC sites plus an option for two additional PMC modules using a carrier card in a 2-slot configuration.

All boards have options for single or dual PMC/XMC sites and reliable storage.  They also support a variety of USB, RS232, Gigabit Ethernet and display interfaces.
